HONDURAS LEMPIRA

Lempira is not a sexy cultivar. It's a Catimor hybrid, bred for disease resistance and high yield, not complexity or competition scores. Most specialty roasters ignore it entirely, chasing heirloom varieties with better pedigrees.

That's their loss.

The most common feedback we get on this coffee is that it's very smooth and not bitter at all.

When grown at proper elevation and processed with care, Lempira delivers exactly what good coffee should: balance, clarity, and approachable sweetness. It reminds you of milk chocolate, brown sugar, and stone fruit notes with medium body and clean acidity. It's not trying to be exotic. It's trying to be consistently good, and it succeeds.

Named after Chief Lempira, a Honduran indigenous hero who led resistance against Spanish colonization, this cultivar was released in 1997 as an economic lifeline for smallholder farmers facing coffee leaf rust devastation. It helped Honduras become Central America's largest coffee producer, which is very important for the region.

Why This Works: Lempira gets overlooked because of its Catimor genetics, a cross between arabica and robusta designed for resilience rather than cup scores. But genetics don't tell the whole story. Elevation, soil, processing, and roasting skill matter more than variety name-dropping. This coffee proves it.

Roast Level: Medium to medium dark

Tasting Notes: Milk chocolate, brown sugar, stone fruit, balanced

The Bottom Line: This is an underrated variety which over-delivers on quality. The kind of coffee that doesn't need hype, just proper attention.
